Your AI Platform Often Depends on Your Company's Size

The competition between AI frontier companies is intense. With IPOs anticipated from OpenAI and Anthropic, the race for users is fierce. SmarterX wanted to know what platforms businesses are using.

Earlier this year, we asked knowledge workers which generative AI productivity platforms their organization provide a license to use. Here’s what respondents said:

  • ChatGPT — 59%

  • Microsoft Copilot — 46%

  • Google Gemini — 42%

  • Anthropic Claude — 37%

  • Other — 11%

  • No company license — 8%

These findings come from our 2026 State of AI for Business report, which was released in May. The report surveyed more than 2,100 professionals across industries and company sizes.

For this question, respondents could choose more than one AI platform. The survey found ChatGPT to be the most widely provided generative AI platform at work today but that top-line number tells only part of the story.

At first glance, the ranking seems clear. ChatGPT is the most popular and most used.

But it really depends on the size of the company.

When you split the data by company size, the picture flips:

  • At the smallest firms (under $1M in revenue), ChatGPT dominates — 73% of respondents report access to it.
  • At the largest enterprises ($1B+ in revenue), Microsoft Copilot dominates — also at 73% — while ChatGPT drops all the way to 36%.

Why does it shake out this way? Large enterprises tend to already be deep in the Microsoft ecosystem — Office 365, Azure, Teams — so Copilot rides in on existing contracts and relationships. Smaller companies, without those entrenched infrastructure ties, are far more likely to go straight to ChatGPT.

Also Worth Noting

Because respondents could select multiple platforms, these numbers aren't mutually exclusive. Many organizations license more than one AI tool, which is increasingly the norm, not the exception. Running several platforms simultaneously is already a common reality for businesses of all sizes.

This is just one data point from a report full of them. You can read and download the complete 2026 State of AI for Business Report for more insights on organizational readiness, training gaps, governance, and more.
