Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about AI Score.

How Business AI Score and Personal AI Score work, what your results mean, and how we protect your data.

Section 01

The basics

What is AI Score?

AI Score by SmarterX is a pair of free assessments that measure AI transformation progress—one for organizations and one for individuals. You rate a set of plain-language statements about where things stand today. In return, you get an overall score, a grade for every pillar, and clear priorities for what to work on next.

It's the companion platform to The AI Transformation Blueprint, so every result connects to a practical next step.

What's the difference between the Business AI Score and the Personal AI Score?

Business AI Score is about your organization. Personal AI Score is about you.

Business AI Score Personal AI Score
The question it answers How ready is your organization for AI? What's your AI maturity?
Built for Leaders shaping AI transformation Professionals in every function and role
Pillars 8: Vision, Strategy, Data, Technology, Governance, Literacy, People, Performance 5: Knowledge, Application, Judgment, Impact, Mindset
Statements 67 37
Time to complete 12–15 minutes 8–10 minutes
Which one should I take?

If you lead or influence your organization's AI strategy, start with Business AI Score. If you want an honest read on your own AI knowledge, skills, and impact, take Personal AI Score.

Many people take both. Every organizational transformation is a collection of individual transformations.

Do the Business and Personal scores connect to each other?

They're built on one framework and use the same grading scale, so your results speak the same language. But they're separate assessments with separate scores. Your Personal AI Score doesn't feed into your organization's Business AI Score, and vice versa. However, if you create an AI Score account, your private dashboard will give you access to both assessments, and give you the ability to retake them and track your progress.

Is it a technical test?

No. Business AI Score isn't a technical audit, and Personal AI Score isn't an exam. You don't need to know how AI works under the hood. You just need to answer honestly about where you or your organization are today.

Does it cost anything?

No. Both assessments are free, and you'll see your results the moment you finish. There's nothing to purchase to get your score.

Do I need an account?

For Business AI Score, you'll enter your name, work email, and company before you start. That lets you save results, invite teammates, and come back to your report.

For Personal AI Score, you can start right away with an email address. At the end, you have an option to create an account to save your score and track your progress over time.

How do I log back in to see my results?

Sign in at score.smarterx.ai with the email you used when you took the assessment.

Section 02

Taking the assessment

How does it work?

Three steps: assess, score, act.

  1. Assess. Rate each statement on a 1–5 scale, from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree, or choose "Not Sure." Every statement includes a short "Why this matters" explanation if you want more context.
  2. Score. Get one overall score and a grade for every pillar: Strong, Moderate, or Weak.
  3. Act. Open The AI Transformation Blueprint to the pillars where you scored lowest, pick your next moves, and retake the assessment later to see what changed.
Can I take a break and come back?

Yes. Your progress saves automatically, so you can step away and pick up where you left off.

Any tips for getting an accurate score?

Be honest. Rate where you or your organization genuinely are today, not where you hope to be next quarter. A flattering score feels good for a minute; an honest one tells you exactly where to focus.

If your team is taking Business AI Score, answer on your own rather than comparing notes. Differences between people's answers are some of the most useful findings in the report.

How does "Not Sure" affect my score?

"Not Sure" counts as zero points, so it lowers the score for that pillar. It doesn't drop out of the calculation, and it isn't treated as neutral.

That's by design. If you can't say whether something is in place—an AI policy, a training program, a way to measure results—it probably isn't working yet for the people who need it. Not knowing is a real gap, and it's worth closing.

So use "Not Sure" when you genuinely don't know. Don't guess high to avoid it.

Who from my organization should take the Business AI Score?

Start with whoever is leading AI efforts—an executive sponsor, a functional leader, or an AI council. Then invite a cross-section of the organization: leaders and individual contributors, across functions.

The most valuable insights show up when different seats see a different company. More perspectives make for a clearer picture.

Can I use Business AI Score for one team or department?

Business AI Score is designed to represent the full organization, and every statement is written that way. You can invite just one team to take it. Their responses will still produce an organizational score, seen through that team's eyes.

If you invite people across the organization, the Team Report lets you filter by role and function to compare how different groups see things. A separate score for an individual department isn't available today.

In order to gauge the maturity of teams and departments, we recommend having them take Personal AI Score and then viewing those assessments in aggregate to evaluate the AI maturity of a group.

Section 03

Your results

What do I get when I finish?

Your results appear as soon as you submit:

  • Your overall score. One number, one grade, and a plain-language read on what it means.
  • Pillar Score Map. The shape of your progress at a glance, with markers showing which pillars are within reach of the next grade.
  • Strongest Pillar and Focus Area. Where your foundation is solid, and where focused effort will move you fastest.

You can also download your report to share or revisit.

How do the grades work?

Every score—overall and by pillar—uses the same three grades, across both assessments.

Grades describe where things stand. They don't rank you against anyone else.

What does my score actually do?

It gives you a baseline and a starting point for action. Your score shows where your foundation is solid, where the gaps are, and what to prioritize next. Every statement maps to an action ladder in The AI Transformation Blueprint, so a weak score turns into a to-do list.

Retake it later, and your score becomes a way to measure progress.

My score is lower than I expected. Is that bad?

Not at all. Most organizations and professionals are still early in their AI transformation. An honest low score is far more useful than an inflated high one, because it shows you exactly where to start.

Pillars that grade Weak are great starting points for building AI roadmaps and change management plans.

Should I retake it? When?

Yes—AI transformation is ongoing, and your score should move as you do. We suggest retaking every six to twelve months, or after a major milestone like a new AI platform rollout, a training program, or a new AI policy.

Section 04

Teams and the Team Report

How do I get my team involved?

Create a business account, then invite teammates by email from your dashboard. Each person takes Business AI Score on their own, and their perspectives combine into a single organizational score.

What's in the Team Report?

The Team Report is the team admin's view of the results:

  • One organizational score, built from every respondent's perspective.
  • Views by role and function, so you can see whether leadership sees a different company than everyone else. These are perspectives on the organization, not separate scores.
  • Perspective gaps, highlighting the pillars where groups disagree most.
  • Complete individual assessments for each respondent.
If my team takes the Business AI Score, how do I see their responses?

As the team admin, you'll find everything in your Team Report, including each respondent's complete assessment—every answer, plus their overall and pillar scores. Teammates see only their own individual report.

Keep in mind that each person's score is their read on the organization, shaped by their role and visibility. Differences between people reflect different perspectives, not individual performance.

Is there a minimum number of respondents?

You'll get an organizational score from the very first response. But the Team Report gets more useful the more people take part.

Role and function views appear once a group has at least 5 people. Smaller groups aren't shown on their own, to protect respondent privacy, though their responses still count toward the organization's totals.

Can I remove people from my team?

Yes. Team admins can remove members from the account, and they can promote users to admins so they can have full access to the Team Report data.

I'm an employee. Can I opt out of sharing my score with my boss?

It depends on which assessment you take.

  • Personal AI Score is private by default. We'll ask whether you want to share your results with your organization before you start, and again after you see your report. If you say no, your results stay yours. (Note: The capability to incorporate Personal AI Score assessments into a business account is invite-only at launch.)
  • Business AI Score, when your organization invites you, is designed to be shared with your team admin. Your complete assessment, including each answer and your scores, appears in the Team Report so leaders can see how different people experience the organization. Your answers describe the organization, not you.
If I take the Personal AI Score now and my company sets up an account later, will my history become visible?

No, not unless you choose to share it. Joining a company account doesn't change the privacy of your Personal AI Score.

Section 05

Privacy and data

How is my data used?

We use your responses to calculate your score and build your report. For Business AI Score teams, responses also feed your organization's Team Report.

We use your contact details to save your account, send you your results, and share relevant resources from SmarterX, such as AI Academy and the Blueprint. With your permission, anonymized and aggregated responses may also support SmarterX research on how organizations and professionals are adopting AI.

The full details live in our Privacy Policy.

Will my information be shared with anyone?

We never publish individual or organizational scores. There are no public leaderboards. Here's who can see what inside the platform:

You Your team admin Other teammates
Your Personal AI Score Yes Only if you choose to share No
Your Business AI Score, taken through your organization's invite Yes Yes—your complete assessment and scores No
Your organization's Team Report Only if you're the admin Yes No

SmarterX doesn't sell your personal information.

How secure is the platform?

Security is built into every layer of AI Score. Here's how we protect your data:

  • Private by design. Your organization's team scores are visible only to your own account admins and SmarterX. Nothing in the platform can publish or share them.
  • Encrypted in transit and at rest. All traffic uses HTTPS (TLS), and all stored data is encrypted with AES-256.
  • Audited infrastructure. AI Score runs in SmarterX's own Google Cloud account, on infrastructure independently audited to ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, and SOC 2. The database has no public internet address.
  • Secure by default. Role-based access with every permission checked on the server, verified sign-in, credentials kept in a managed secrets vault, rate limiting and bot protection, and an audit log of administrative actions.
  • Reviewed before launch. The code, its third-party packages, and the cloud configuration were reviewed with AI-powered security tools and industry-standard scanners, and confirmed issues were fixed.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. Contact us to request a copy of your data or have it deleted. You can also delete your data directly from your account settings (once you have a saved user account).

Section 06

From score to action

What should I do after I get my score?

Start with your Focus Area and any pillars that grade Weak. Then open The AI Transformation Blueprint to those pillars. Every statement in the assessment pairs with a three-rung action ladder:

  • Starting. The first move when little or nothing has been done yet.
  • Building. Creates momentum and turns a weakness into a strength.
  • Operating. Sustains excellence and expands impact.

Pick the rung that matches where you are, take a few next steps, then retake the assessment to see what changed.

What is The AI Transformation Blueprint?

It's a practical change management guide by SmarterX CEO Paul Roetzer, built around the same 8 business pillars and 5 personal pillars as AI Score. AI Score tells you where you stand; the Blueprint tells you what to do about it. Learn about the Blueprint.

How does AI Score connect to AI Academy?

Your score shows where you or your team need to grow. AI Academy by SmarterX is where you build those skills, through courses, learning journeys, and live sessions.

If you're already an AI Mastery Member, use your Focus Area to decide what to take next. A Weak Knowledge pillar points to foundational courses; a Weak Application pillar points to hands-on courses and build sessions.

Your score doesn't appear inside AI Academy today.

Do I need an AI Academy account to take AI Score?

No. AI Score is free and open to anyone, whether or not you're an AI Academy member.

My organization already has an AI Academy business account. Can someone talk with me about next steps for my team?

Absolutely. Reach out to your SmarterX account contact or contact us. Your Team Report is a great starting point for planning training, setting priorities, and aligning leadership.
