Most knowledge workers use AI in some capacity. Whether it’s writing an email, drafting blogs, or even piloting a new agent. AI is everywhere.
But here's what our data reveals: Activity is not the same as progress.
When more than 2,100 business professionals described their organization's AI momentum, the single most common answer — chosen by 41% — was "inconsistent or siloed," according to the 2026 State of AI for Business report. That means four in ten professionals see their organization as having pockets of AI adoption, but no cohesive, organization-wide direction.
Add in "stalled" and "not started" and nearly half of all respondents (49%) describe their organization's AI trajectory in negative or fragmented terms. Only 28% say their organization is accelerating.
What "Siloed" Actually Means
"Inconsistent or siloed" describes individual employees or small teams who are adopting AI on their own, but nothing connects it to shared goals, standards, or direction.
This is a predictable pattern. When AI tools become easy to access, adoption spreads from the bottom up: People experiment, teams build their own workflows. That's not a problem by itself. The problem comes when there's no structure to coordinate activity into something bigger.
The good news is that siloed is fixable with coordination.
The Gap Between Siloed and Accelerating
Here's one of the most useful findings in the report: Among organizations in the Understanding stage of AI adoption, 60% describe their momentum as inconsistent or siloed. Among organizations in the Scaling stage, 62% say they're accelerating.
The difference is structure.
If your organization has a lot of AI activity but no real traction, you need more coordination: getting clear on who owns AI strategy, what the plan is, and making sure teams have the training and direction to move in the same direction.
Structure drives momentum and paves the way to scaling.
