Learning and Development in the AI Age

AI model advancements and agent capabilities will force a radical transformation of talent, teams, and organizational structures.

While many organizations are still trying to enable and teach the most basic AI assistant functions in ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and Gemini, the AI labs are racing ahead.

We must build on proven approaches to learning and development to reskill and upskill workforces at the speed the market and the technology demand.

This requires a foundation of dynamic learning and personalized journeys.

The Dynamic Learning Imperative

Providing access to AI tools and course catalogs is not enough to drive people toward competency and mastery that grow their careers and organizations.

Dynamic learning continuously adapts to technology and organizational changes, as well as the learner’s AI literacy, role, goals, and progress.

Rather than relying primarily on a fixed curriculum of on-demand courses and certificates, a dynamic learning approach brings together evergreen foundational education with timely content and experiences that respond to changes in AI.

Dynamic learning also mandates an update in how we measure the impact of education and training initiatives.

Monitoring course completion rates and AI tech utilization rates are helpful leading indicators, but they don’t tell the whole story.

Learners need to demonstrate high levels of proficiency and confidence in applying AI to their work, and adaptability and resilience to a rapidly changing environment.

This requires establishing a baseline of knowledge and capabilities through standardized assessments, and then tracking improvement across key dimensions.

Over time, learning programs can continuously evolve based on:

  • New AI capabilities, platform changes, and use cases
  • An individual’s role, goals, and AI maturity
  • Emerging skills and organizational priorities
  • Opportunities to reinforce and apply learning
  • New knowledge and developments in the market

The goal is a learning experience that remains relevant as both the learner and the technology evolve.

In short, dynamic learning delivers the right knowledge and skills to the right person at the right time, continuously adapting as the learner—and the world around them—changes.

Why is dynamic learning essential in the AI age?

Consider a snapshot of AI advancements over just the last two years that completely altered what was possible with AI, and how it should have been taught within enterprises:

  • September 2024: OpenAI introduces o1, the world’s first publicly available reasoning model. AI could now support more complex problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Winter 2025: Advancements in AI agent capabilities, specifically related to Claude Code and OpenClaw, demonstrate the near-term potential for agents to perform long-horizon tasks that would take humans hours or days.
  • August 2026: Hugging Face discloses it had been hacked by OpenAI agents that escaped containment in testing, showing the risks and opportunities of agent swarms to collaborate (and conspire).
  • September 2026: Multiple AI leaders and labs claim the latest AI models, such as GPT-6 Astra, have achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI). While it is a broadly debated term, it roughly means that the AI models are on par with (or superior to) the average human worker at most cognitive tasks.

In addition, despite calls for regulation and “pacing” AI research and development, the AI labs are locked in a competitive battle resulting in new state-of-the-art frontier models being released every 2-3 months.

The rate of releases drives confusion and uncertainty for business leaders, and leads to constantly shifting user experiences in leading AI platforms as the labs attempt to productize and market their innovations.

Organizations have the opportunity to rapidly evolve and strengthen their learning and development programs with the right technology, curriculum, and applied experiences.

Expanding AI Academy’s Impact Through Dynamic Learning and Technology

AI Academy by SmarterX is the cornerstone of our mission to accelerate AI literacy and human-centered transformation for individuals and organizations.

Personalized Journeys

The five Pillars of Personal AI Transformation, as identified in The AI Transformation Blueprint, are: Knowledge, Application, Judgment, Impact, and Mindset.

We continually evolve AI Academy to push individual learner progress across these core areas. Personalization of learning journeys is fundamental to optimizing experiences and outcomes.

We approach personalization through content, technology, and community:

  • Persona-Based: Education is connected to AI maturity, role, function, department, and industry.
  • Skills Driven: Curriculum is designed to meet demand for emerging skills.
  • Platform-Complete: Brand-agnostic coverage of the leading AI platforms—ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and Gemini.
  • Goal-Specific: Learning aligns with career path aspirations and organizational plans.
  • Adaptive: Timing, format, and focus adjust based on real-time news and trends, technological advancements, and organizational changes.
  • Peer-to-Peer: Coworkers and community members are support systems.
  • AI-Powered: Intelligent technology delivers learner recommendations and insights.
  • Empathetic: Programming and communications consider employee sentiment toward AI, as well as factors that drive resistance to AI adoption and change.
  • Scalable: Designed to scale from dozens to thousands of employees.
  • Managed: Cohorts group learners by AI maturity level (based on AI Score assessments) or functional focus, and pair them with instructors who guide their journeys through regular checkpoints and live applied AI sessions (coming Q4 2026).
  • Open: Content can live in our proprietary learning management system (LMS), or be streamed into 3rd party platforms (coming Q4 2026).

Here are some of the questions we use to inform personalized learning journeys?

  • What is their AI maturity, as measured by AI Score?
  • What stage of transformation are they in?
  • What is their sentiment toward AI (i.e., are they an AI promoter, detractor, or passive)?
  • What AI platform(s) do they use?
  • What is their job function?
  • What is their industry?
  • What is their desired career path?
  • What skills do they want or need to learn?

Measurable Transformation

AI Academy has hundreds of business accounts that use our courses to accelerate AI literacy in their organizations.

Through conversations with leaders in those organizations, as well as my private discussions with executives across industries, it is clear that leaders are struggling to set clear AI transformation goals, establish and adapt AI training and education programs, build AI roadmaps, and measure progress.

AI Score, which launches in public beta in October 2026, is a change management tool from SmarterX designed to make AI transformation more measurable and actionable.

Register for Introduction to AI Score for Business Leaders on Nov. 13.

AI Score lets leaders assess their organizations (Business AI Score), and individuals assess themselves (Personal AI Score). Results then inform personalized learning journeys and transformation blueprints.

AI Score is based on the idea that transformation requires deep change management. It cannot simply be technology—Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini—handed to employees who lack the context and understanding of how to use the tools, which is what is happening in many of the enterprises I meet with.

Together, Personal AI Score and Business AI Score can establish cohorts and set the starting line for transformations. The assessments can be retaken periodically to evaluate progress and adapt learning plans.

In addition, we are building new weekly and monthly reports to give AI Academy business account team leads real-time views of engagement and progress, and establishing quarterly business reviews (QBRs) with our premium accounts to align activities with learning and transformation goals.

  • AI Utilization Reports: Internal reports that monitor your team’s AI tool usage. When combined with AI Academy learner data, your organization can get a complete picture of adoption and impact. (Available through third-party systems.)
  • Learner Activity Reports: Automated weekly reports that give team leads real-time views of learner engagement, including: login activity, course progress, certificates earned, and live session attendance.
  • Academy Account Reports: Automated monthly reports that provide a comprehensive view of account performance covering learner engagement, course completion rates, live session participation, and progress against defined learning goals.
  • Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs): Strategic sessions with the SmarterX customer success team that review progress against learning goals, surface insights from engagement data, and align on priorities for the quarter ahead.

What Else Is Coming to AI Academy?

Join us Nov. 19 for AI Academy Day 2026 (open to AI Academy members and non-members) for a full overview of the product roadmap, but here are some of the other elements of AI Academy’s next phase:
