  • Marketing AI Institute: Media, event and education business founded in 2016 that is designed to make AI approachable and actionable for marketers. The Institute has more than 90,000 contacts, and its flagship in-person conference, MAICON, draws 1,000+ marketers to Cleveland each year. 
  • AI Academy by SmarterX: Originally launched in 2020 under the Marketing AI Institute brand, AI Academy is being spun off as a dedicated site and brand. AI Academy is a high-growth business unit designed to prepare individuals and organizations for the future of work by making AI education accessible and personalized.
  • The Artificial Intelligence Show: The podcast is SmarterX’s fastest growing media channel with 65,000+ downloads per month. The podcast serves as a promotional tool and lead generator for SmarterX and its business units. 

SmarterX also has an internal AI Content Studio that supports audience growth, demand generation, and customer success across all brands / business units. The AI Content Studio produces blog posts, books, blueprints, courses, newsletters, podcasts, presentations, research, videos and webinars.

Role Overview

The Director of Events Marketing will be responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies that drive attendance, sponsorships, and engagement for SmarterX’s event portfolio. This role will oversee branding, content, digital campaigns, and partnerships to maximize the reach and impact of industry-leading AI events.

Key Responsibilities

Event Marketing Strategy & Execution

  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing plans for all SmarterX events, including, but not limited to:
    • MAICON (Marketing AI Conference)
    • AI for Writers Summit
    • AI for Agencies Summit
    • AI for B2B Marketing Summit
    • Marketing AI Industry Council
    • AI in CLE
    • AI Impact Summit
  • Create and manage multi-channel marketing campaigns to drive registrations and engagement.
  • Support group ticket sales campaigns. 
  • Oversee event branding and messaging, ensuring consistency across all marketing assets.
  • Own ticket sale and event revenue tracking and reporting. 

Audience Growth & Engagement

  • Develop strategies to expand event audiences, including partnerships, targeted outreach, and content-driven promotion.
  • Optimize lead generation and conversion funnels for event registrations.
  • Implement engagement initiatives to enhance attendee experience pre-, during, and post-event.

Sponsorship & Partnership Marketing

  • Collaborate with the sales team to develop sponsorship marketing materials and campaigns.
  • Manage promotional partnerships with industry organizations, influencers, and media partners.
  • Oversee co-marketing initiatives with sponsors and speakers to maximize event exposure.

Content & Digital Promotion

  • Lead content marketing efforts to support event awareness and thought leadership.
  • Oversee the creation of event-related blog posts, social media content, email campaigns, and video promotions.
  • Optimize event websites and landing pages for user experience and conversion.

AI Agent Management

  • Support AI agent planning, development, management and integration for event marketing operations.
  • Oversee and optimize the use of AI-powered marketing agents to enhance event promotions and customer interactions.
  • Ensure AI agents are trained with up-to-date event information and provide accurate responses.
  • Continuously evaluate and refine AI-driven marketing processes for efficiency and effectiveness.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience in event marketing, audience growth, and digital campaign execution.
  • Strong understanding of marketing AI, content strategy, and lead generation.
  • Experience with conference and event promotion, including paid media, organic social, and email marketing.
  • Ability to analyze data and optimize marketing efforts for maximum impact.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.
  • Experience working with AI-powered marketing tools is a plus.
  • Deep experience with HubSpot is preferred. 
  • Advanced prompting abilities with standard LLMs and reasoning models. 
  • Extensive experience with OpenAI ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini and / or Microsoft Copilot.
