Moving from the Basics Into AI Integration and Transformation

Many knowledge workers know how to prompt AI. Now, they’re working to integrate AI into their workflows and transform the way they work.

That's according to findings from the 2026 State of AI for Business Report, a survey of more than 2,100 professionals on how they understand, adopt, and organize around AI.

The survey asked respondents to place themselves on a five-stage AI adoption journey:

  • Curiosity - beginning to explore AI, but haven't taken steps to build literacy
  • Understanding - learning the fundamentals and connecting the dots to their role and industry
  • Experimentation - actively testing AI tools to boost productivity and decision-making
  • Integration - embedding AI into daily workflows and strategic work
  • Transformation - reimagining the job itself, with AI as a core collaborator

The survey found 53% of professionals now say they're in the Integration or Transformation phases of AI adoption.

That means more than half of respondents say they've moved past experimenting with AI tools and into embedding the technology into their everyday roles and rethinking how they work all together.

Help Going Deeper into AI

On the other end, just 12% remain in the earliest stages of Curiosity and Understanding, where the work is still about building fundamental AI literacy rather than applying it.

The implication is significant: the people most engaged with AI right now don't need to be sold on why it matters. They know. What they need is help going deeper: more advanced skills, better strategies, and support applying AI in more meaningful ways.

One thing worth noting here: this survey reached a self-selected, AI-forward audience; that is, professionals already invested enough in AI to take a survey about it. That's not a representative snapshot of every workplace.

But it's exactly what makes this data useful in two ways:

  • As a benchmark. If you're leaning into AI at work, where do you stack up against your peers? Are you where most of the AI-forward crowd is, ahead of them, or catching up?
  • As a roadmap. If your colleagues or your organization are still earlier on the curve, this is a preview of where the leading edge is heading. The stages more people are moving into (Integration, Transformation) are the ones your team will need to navigate next.
